that dog

One of the language peculiarities we have found here is referring to something in one's possession not with the possessive "my" or "our," or even a simple "the" but instead "that."  This is most often done when the expression is intended to indicate annoyance, or duty or something slightly negative.  Like, "I should go start that machine." Which means "I don't really want to go in -25 degrees at 7am with wet hair to start the snowmachine, but I will, unless you offer to..."  Or "Eliza, come see what that dog found."IMG_1851.jpg Not only had "that dog" brought us back the rabbit, she had brought us back the rabbit, still stuck in the snare, still attached to the stick.  We quickly moved the whole package into the entry, so that if our neighbor walked by he wouldn't see that our dog had been robbing him of a tasty dinner.

This and a full water bucket have come to mean more to me than I would ever have imagined.IMG_1864.jpg

big project, small hands

Keith got a trailer for the fourwheeler in September and turned himself into a firewood collecting dervish, gouging a deep trail between our cabin and ten miles out in the woods where he found some enormous logs.  No photos of the large trees he brought back, but they were too heavy for me to even help lift.  He rolled them end on end, tempting a hernia.  But there is a certain security in a large pile of logs, as the temperature heads below -30 now in December.  On this particular day he found a little helper was visiting when he returned from the wood yard.IMG_1796.jpg IMG_1797.jpg

going to the insulation store

Furball needs a little more than just a snazzy dog-mansion to stay warm through the Arctic winter, so we headed out to collect some doghouse insulation.  A September day on the Yukon Flats.IMG_1773.jpgIMG_1757.jpg
IMG_1783.jpg We store the hay in the fish cache, and doll it out periodically to Furball, who shows below that she is very thankful.

putting up salmon

I put up a bit of the King run with our friends the Thomas's earlier in July, and then we got ten or so Silver Salmon from a guy's very full fish wheel.  We had to call in reinforcements to show us how to appropriately fillet the fish, and yet other reinforcements to show us how to spell fillet.  Over two nights we got the job done, it was slippery work...but now, months later, grilled Salmon is a very tasty treat.  And there are no signs that we'll run out before spring.IMG_1748.jpg IMG_1746.jpg
Check out the left over manicure, a little out of place in this messy work.

Keith used his chainsaw and recent birthday gift tool to get us a dish drying rack.  It may look a little rough, but we're using it daily.
